As tensions heightened in the Middle East and North Africa in recent weeks, Suncor has been paying close attention to the situation. Building on the actions that had already been taken as part of the company’s contingency plans and protocols for a situation such as this one, Suncor formally activated its emergency response team on February 20. The response team, which includes senior management, safety and security experts, human resources and logistics staff, has undertaken several actions to support the safety of the company’s employees and contractors and others in the country.
Suncor-operated field operations have been shut down since early in the week and most of our expatriate employees and contractors left Libya on February 21 and 22.
After that time, a small number remained in-country -- those that needed to be moved from field operations to evacuation points, and the leadership and safety professionals who were managing the evacuation.
As of February 25, all Suncor expatriate staff have left Libya, with the last group departing by sea to Malta mid-day local time.
At this time, our response centres in Calgary and Malta are continuing to work with industry partners, service providers and the Canadian government to support plans to evacuate workers, including in non-Suncor operated oilfields in Libya.
We are also working to provide appropriate support to employees who are Libyan nationals, and to provide support to individuals and families of employees and contractors who have been evacuated, some of whom are still in transit to their home destinations.
