A message from Bruno Francoeur, vice president, Suncor Montreal refinery ...
I want to provide you with an update on where we are in our efforts to respond to the incident that occurred at our refinery on Tuesday night.
Our clean-up efforts are going well. Through the night, we basically completed our recovery efforts. We are continuing, but that this point the majority of what we are recovering is water.
The oil containment boom will remain in the water and, and in fact with the rain today, we have increased the amount of boom we have in place as a preventative measure in case any further material gets washed into the river because of the rain.
Our investigation into the cause of the spill continues. Once we identify the root cause of the incident, we will take all necessary steps to prevent this from happening again.
Once we have completed the recovery and clean-up work, we will be moving to the next phase which will be the rehabilitation of the affected area. We have had our initial meeting with Environment Quebec in this area, and we will continue to work with them on what will be required.
I would like to express our sincere thanks to the agencies and organizations that have assisted us in the response to this incident, including the Montreal Fire Department, the Quebec Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada and to our local municipalities.
