On April 6, workers at our Burrard Products Terminal, located in Port Moody, British Columbia discovered a leak of a product called R100 from one of our storage tanks at the terminal. R100 is a non-fossil fuel, soybean-based blending agent that is biodegradable.
Our emergency response was immediately activated. We take any unplanned release very seriously. Our top priority is the safety of our employees and the public and to minimize the impact on the environment.
Two hundred and twenty-five (225) barrels of R100 leaked from a tank within the Burrard Products Terminal property. We believe a very small amount - approximately 2 litres - may have reached the waters of the Burrard Inlet. Three levels of booms were set up and remain in place in the Inlet to contain any R100.
Steps, such as trenching around the tank and blocking storm water sewers, have been taken to prevent any further material from reaching the water and work is underway to recover as much of the product as possible.
The incident was reported to regulators and we are cooperating fully with them. We are also conducting our own internal investigation. We understand the heightened concern from the community and our stakeholders about this incident and recognize that our communication process should be more robust. We are working with the regulators and our stakeholders to improve this process.
Any unplanned release is unacceptable to us and we are working to prevent this from happening again.
Fuite de liquide biodégradable au terminal Burrard
Le 6 avril, des travailleurs de notre terminal de produits Burrard, situé à Port Moody, en Colombie-Britannique, ont découvert qu’un des réservoirs de stockage du terminal laissait échapper un produit appelé R100. Le R100 est un carburant d’origine non fossile à base de soja qui est biodégradable.
Nous avons immédiatement activé notre procédure d’intervention. Nous prenons très au sérieux tout rejet non planifié. Notre priorité absolue est la sécurité de nos employés et du public et la réduction de tout impact sur l’environnement.
La fuite du réservoir de R100 sur la propriété du terminal de produits Burrard a été de deux cent vingt-cinq (225) barils. Nous croyons qu’une très petite quantité – environ deux litres – s’est peut être déversée dans l’anse Burrard. Trois barrages flottants resteront en place dans l’anse pour contenir toute quantité de R100.
Des mesures ont été prises, notamment le creusage d’une tranchée autour du réservoir et le colmatage des égouts pluviaux, pour empêcher tout déversement supplémentaire dans l’eau; des travaux sont aussi en cours pour récupérer la plus grande quantité possible de produit.
Nous avons signalé l’incident aux organismes réglementaires et leur offrons notre entière collaboration. Nous menons aussi notre propre enquête interne. Nous comprenons que la collectivité et les parties intéressées sont vivement préoccupées par cet incident et reconnaissons que notre processus de communication se doit d’être plus rigoureux. Nous travaillons de concert avec les organismes réglementaires et nos intervenants à l’amélioration de ce processus.
